WEEK

Between November 20th and 24th, 2023, the ATHENS Week took place at the DECivil Museum, IST. The ATHENS Program aims to offer intensive specialization courses, allowing participants from different universities to take high-level scientific mini-courses and connect with students from various nationalities and backgrounds. The Instituto Superior Técnico is the only Portuguese institution associated with this network of universities, and the thematic line related to the Spaces of Knowledge of CiTUA was represented through the organization of the course: "Beyond the Present: Designing the Future of Educational Spaces." The course was taught by Professors Alexandra Alegre, Francisco Teixeira Bastos, and Patrícia Lourenço, along with researcher Cássio de Lucena, and had the participation of 17 students from Italian, Polish, Spanish, French, German, Colombian, and Mauritanian nationalities.

WEEK

From March 18 to 22, 2024, a week-long intensive course took place at IST as part of the ATHENS Programme, titled "Beyond the Present: Designing the Future of Educational Spaces." This course was organised by Alexandra Alegre, Cássio de Lucena and Patrícia Lourenço from CITUA, aligning with the ROLE research project's thematic focus on Knowledge Environments (https://cituarole.wixsite.com/role). Twenty students from the ATHENS network of European universities, including Politecnico di Milano, Warsaw University of Technology, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Technical University of Madrid, Czech Technical University in Prague, University Politehnica of Bucharest and ParisTech actively participated in the course.

The course explored the role of outdoor school spaces in shaping education and resilience to climate change. Rooted in the OECD's definition of the learning environment, it examined optimizing outdoor spaces to enrich educational experiences, foster social equity, and contribute to broader sustainability objectives. A one-week studio-based programme was centred on theoretical modules, site visits, city walks, critical thinking regarding Lisbon’s case studies, discussion based on presentations, films/documentaries and text readings. Site visits included three schools in Alvalade neighbourhood: Escola Básica São Miguel, Escola Básica Coruchéus and Escola Básica Eugénio dos Santos.

Students from different fields and backgrounds were grouped in multidisciplinary teams, collaborating to explore the futures of educational spaces through an approach aimed at generating conceptual ideas/projects based on future scenarios, with the intention of stimulating debate on social and technological trends of the present.
